Biography

Fred Thompson was an American actor and politician. Born Freddie Dalton Thompson in Sheffield, Alabama, he qualified as a lawyer and first appeared on screen playing himself in the 1985 film Marie.

He went on to act in many films and television series, often in authoritative roles. His credits include No Way Out (1987), The Hunt for Red October (1990), Days of Thunder (1990) as Big John, Die Hard 2 (1990), Cape Fear (1991), and the role of District Attorney Arthur Branch on Law & Order (2002–2007) and its spin-offs.

Thompson served as a Republican U.S. Senator from Tennessee from 1994 to 2003 and sought his party's presidential nomination in 2008.
