Biography
Fritz Reuter Leiber Sr. (also credited as Fritz Lieber) was an American actor. A Shakespearean performer on stage, he toured extensively with his wife Virginia Bronson in a company later known as Fritz Leiber & Co. He made his film debut in 1916 as Mercutio in a silent Romeo and Juliet and appeared in numerous silent films, including Cleopatra (1917) and The Queen of Sheba (1921). He was the father of science fiction writer Fritz Leiber Jr.
Leiber worked as a character actor in sound films, often in historical roles. His credits include Gaspard in A Tale of Two Cities (1935) and Dr. Charbonnet in The Story of Louis Pasteur (1936). Other films include The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939), The Sea Hawk (1940), Phantom of the Opera (1943), Scarlet Street (1945) and Monsieur Verdoux (1947). He died in 1949.
