Biography
Gareth Pugh is a British fashion designer and costume designer. Born in Sunderland in 1981, he began working as a costume designer for the National Youth Theatre at the age of 14. He studied at City of Sunderland College before completing a degree in fashion design at Central Saint Martins in 2003.
Pugh gained prominence in the mid-2000s for his avant-garde, sculptural fashion collections shown in London. He has designed for performers including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Kylie Minogue, and received the ANDAM Fashion Award in 2008. With his husband and creative partner Carson McColl, he leads the studio Hard + Shiny and has worked on theatre, ballet and performance projects.
Pugh and McColl served as both costume designers and production designers on Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later (2025) and Nia DaCosta’s 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple (2026). Their earlier screen credit includes costume design on the 2023 television special Free Your Mind: The Matrix Now.
