Biography

Gary Yershon is an English composer. Born in London on 2 November 1954, he studied Music and Drama at the University of Hull. He began his career as an actor-musician before turning to full-time composition in 1991. He is an Associate Artist of the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Yershon has composed extensively for theatre, radio, television, film and dance. His long collaboration with director Mike Leigh began with his work as musical director on the 1999 film Topsy-Turvy. He went on to compose the scores for Happy-Go-Lucky (2008), Another Year (2010), Mr. Turner (2014), Peterloo (2018) and Hard Truths (2024). His score for Mr. Turner earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score.

He has also worked as a writer and translator, and as musical director for productions including Phyllida Lloyd’s 1994 staging of The Threepenny Opera at the Donmar Warehouse.
