Biography
Ghislain Cloquet (18 April 1924 – 2 November 1981) was a Belgian-born French cinematographer. Born in Antwerp, he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure Louis-Lumière and the Institut des hautes études cinématographiques (IDHEC) in Paris, graduating in 1947 and becoming a naturalised French citizen.
Cloquet worked extensively with Robert Bresson and collaborated with directors including Alain Resnais, Jacques Becker, Jacques Demy, Chris Marker and Roman Polanski. His credits include Night and Fog (1956), Le Trou (1960), Au Hasard Balthazar (1966), The Young Girls of Rochefort (1967), Donkey Skin (1970), Love and Death (1975) and Tess (1979), for which he shared an Academy Award for Best Cinematography. He also taught cinematography at IDHEC.
Cloquet married Sophie Becker, daughter of director Jacques Becker; Jean Becker and Étienne Becker were his brothers-in-law.
