Biography
Gile Steele was an American costume designer who worked primarily at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and later Paramount Pictures. His career began in 1938 at MGM, with early credits including Marie Antoinette.
He contributed to numerous prestige films, including Pride and Prejudice (1940), Waterloo Bridge (1940), Mrs. Miniver (1942), The Heiress (1949) and Samson and Delilah (1949). Steele received Academy Award nominations for The Emperor Waltz (1948) and posthumous nominations in 1951 and 1952; he won Oscars for Best Costume Design for The Heiress and Samson and Delilah.
He studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles around 1927.
