Biography
Gordon Mitchell, also known as Whitey Mitchell, was an American television writer and producer. Born in Hackensack, New Jersey, he began his career as a jazz bassist, performing and recording with artists including Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald and Barbra Streisand before moving to Hollywood in the mid-1960s to write for television.
He contributed scripts to series including Get Smart, The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970), All in the Family (from 1971), The Jeffersons, The Odd Couple, Good Times, Mork & Mindy and Diff'rent Strokes. He co-wrote the screenplay for the feature film Private Resort (1985). Mitchell also worked as a story editor and producer on several shows, later teaching screenwriting at UCLA and UC Riverside. In later life he hosted a radio show in Palm Desert, California, and wrote books on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars and his own career.
