Biography

Grace Lee Whitney (born Mary Ann Chase) was an American actress and singer. She was born on 1 April 1930 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and died on 1 May 2015 in Coarsegold, California.

She began her career as a singer on Detroit radio and in Chicago nightclubs before appearing on Broadway in Top Banana (1951) and in its 1954 film adaptation. Her early film roles included an uncredited part in Some Like It Hot (1959). She made numerous television appearances in the 1950s and 1960s, including episodes of Bewitched and Batman.

Whitney is best known for playing Yeoman Janice Rand in the first season of the original Star Trek series (1966). She reprised the role, promoted to chief petty officer, in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) and appeared in later films in the series, including Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (1984), Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986) and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (1991), as well as an episode of Star Trek: Voyager (1995).
