Biography
Helen Rose (1904–1985) was an American costume designer who worked primarily at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Born in Chicago, Illinois, she attended the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and began her career designing nightclub and stage costumes before moving to Los Angeles in 1929. She designed for Fanchon and Marco and the Ice Follies, then spent two years at 20th Century Fox before joining MGM in 1943.
Rose became chief designer at MGM in the late 1940s and remained there until the late 1960s. She received Academy Awards for Best Costume Design for The Bad and the Beautiful (1952) and I'll Cry Tomorrow (1955), and was nominated eight further times. Among her credits are On the Town (1949), Father of the Bride (1950), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), Mogambo (1953), Forbidden Planet (1956), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) and BUtterfield 8 (1960). She also designed the wedding dress worn by Grace Kelly for her 1956 marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco, as well as Elizabeth Taylor's wedding dress for her marriage to Conrad Hilton.
