Henry G. Sanders can make a withdrawn man understandable without making him easy company. We value the patience of his acting, and Killer of Sheep gives it the time to register fully.

In Killer of Sheep (1978), Henry G. Sanders makes Stan's withdrawal feel like the behaviour of someone who has nothing left to give. Affection has become another demand, though the person asking for it has every right to ask. We found the scenes with Kaycee Moore painful because Sanders makes the exhaustion plain while Moore keeps his wife's hurt just as clear. Neither pushes the other towards a confrontation that would make the trouble easier to explain. It is an exceptionally convincing piece of quiet acting.
Charles Burnett gives both performers time and declines to tell us whose side to take. Sanders benefits from that patience: Stan can be frustrating company without becoming a man the film asks us to dismiss. Some of the supporting acting is hesitant, briefly exposing the effort of performance, but Sanders and Moore keep their marriage believable. Burnett's generosity matters here: neither spouse has to become unreasonable so that the other can earn our sympathy.
The lead was his breakthrough, after minor film roles in the early 1970s, but the career that followed was largely one of supporting work and television appearances. Bull Durham (1988) put him in a studio comedy-drama as Sandy; Whiplash (2014) gave him the ensemble role of Red Henderson. Television offered longer stretches, including six seasons as Robert E. in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993–1998), followed later by Prosper Denton in Queen Sugar (2016–2022).
For Robert E., the blacksmith in the post-Civil War West, Sanders researched the people of the period to make the character more rounded. That is useful preparation for an actor so often cast as an ordinary man or an authority figure. Those roles can sound interchangeable on a cast list; Stan is a reminder of how much Sanders can find in one tired man. Start with Killer of Sheep, and allow for the hesitancy of some of the acting around him.

Sanders has appeared in numerous films, including Bull Durham (1988), Child's Play 3 (1991), Rocky Balboa (2006), Whiplash (2014), Selma (2014) and Samaritan (2022). His television credits include a recurring role as Robert E. on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993–1998) and guest appearances on series such as The Mentalist, Grey's Anatomy, American Horror Story and 9-1-1.
