Biography
Ian Hunter (13 June 1900 – 22 September 1975) was a South African-born British actor of stage, film and television. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London and made his stage debut in the early 1920s. He appeared in several early Hitchcock silent films, including The Ring (1927) and Downhill (1927).
Hunter worked extensively in Hollywood during the 1930s and 1940s. His roles include Theseus in A Midsummer Night's Dream (1935), King Richard the Lionheart in The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938), Captain Crewe in The Little Princess (1939), and Dr John Lanyon in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941). He later appeared in British films such as The Battle of the River Plate (1956) and North West Frontier (1959), and had a recurring role in the television series The Adventures of Robin Hood.
