Biography
Isobel Elsom was an English actress who appeared in stage, film and television productions from 1911 to 1964. Born Isabella Reed in Chesterton, Cambridge, she made her stage debut in the chorus of The Quaker Girl in London and later performed in 17 Broadway productions, including a notable role in Ladies in Retirement (1939), which she reprised in the 1941 film adaptation.
Elsom settled in the United States in the 1930s and became a familiar character actress in Hollywood, often playing aristocratic or upper-class women. Her film credits include Monsieur Verdoux (1947), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), The Paradine Case (1947), Lust for Life (1956), Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing (1955) as Adeline Palmer-Jones, and My Fair Lady (1964) as Mrs Eynsford-Hill. She was married to director Maurice Elvey and later to actor Carl Harbord.
