Jens Albinus makes aggressive men difficult to dismiss, allowing sympathy without making them comfortable company. We value his precise, unpredictable acting, though The Idiots asks it to sustain more provocation than we care to sit through.

In The Idiots (1998), Jens Albinus plays Stoffer, the leader of a collective whose imitations of disability are meant to provoke. He can be aggressive and still invite sympathy, which makes the character harder to dismiss. Albinus brings a precise physical style to the part, but there is nothing comfortably settled about the man he plays. We find that uncertainty more interesting than the commune's activities. It gives us a reason to keep watching a film we have substantial reservations about.
Our problem with Lars von Trier's film is what it asks those naturalistic performances to sustain. The handheld intimacy cannot make the repeated imitations consistently worth enduring, and the comedy has too little to say about what it puts on screen. We grew weary because the provocations kept coming without giving us much more to consider. Albinus's unpredictable playing is an asset, but it cannot cure that repetition. We would not recommend The Idiots simply on the strength of its acting.
The part brought him wider attention, and von Trier became a recurring collaborator through Dancer in the Dark (2000), The Boss of It All (2006) and Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013). Of these, the lead in the corporate satire The Boss of It All gives his comic timing particular room. It is useful evidence against treating Stoffer's aggression as the whole actor. Elsewhere, the Kierkegaard-obsessed recluse in The Bench (2000) draws on his ability to make an isolated, disturbed character moving.
Television expanded his visibility with The Eagle (2004–06) and Borgen (2010–22), in which he plays Jon Berthelsen. Across the screen work, the influence of classical and modern theatre is there in the physical precision. That matters in an actor often cast for a thoughtful presence: there is more to his work than suggesting a busy mind. Try The Boss of It All next for the comedy, especially if The Idiots has tested your patience.
Biography
Jens Albinus is a Danish actor and director. He trained at the acting school of Aarhus Theatre from 1985 to 1989 and remained with the ensemble until 1994, later taking engagements at the Royal Danish Theatre and elsewhere.
Albinus is known for his collaborations with Lars von Trier, appearing as Stoffer in The Idiots (1998), Morty in Dancer in the Dark (2000), the title role in The Boss of It All (2006), and a part in Nymphomaniac: Vol. I (2013). Other notable screen work includes the television series Borgen (2010–2022) as Jon Berthelsen and The Eagle (2004–2006). He has also directed for stage and screen since the late 1990s.
