Fi1m perspective

Jerry Seinfeld makes small grievances worth listening to, though he sometimes looks too amused to believe in the quarrel. His comparatively calm presence helps an exceptional ensemble get away with being selfish, angry and strange.

In Seinfeld (1989), Jerry Seinfeld sometimes looks more amused by an argument than caught up in it. We can see him enjoying the comedy when we ought to believe that his character has something urgent to settle. It is a limitation, and there are exchanges where a little more conviction would help. But he is an effective straight man for this particular group, letting a minor complaint occupy his attention without making every line a demand for ours. We recommend the series warmly, while recognising that its central performer is not its most versatile actor.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus can finish an exchange with Elaine Benes's irritated look; Michael Richards makes Cosmo Kramer's entrance part of the joke before anything else has happened. Seinfeld leaves space for both. We laughed at the contrast between his amused composure and Louis-Dreyfus's tightly controlled irritation. Occasionally that composure becomes detachment, and the others seem to be playing for higher stakes than he is. The ensemble can accommodate the difference, but cannot always disguise it.

His stand-up is built around everyday inconveniences and awkward social behaviour, delivered with deadpan precision. In the series he co-created with Larry David, that attention to small things becomes a way of sustaining whole scenes. The writing by Seinfeld, David and Peter Mehlman, among others, follows objections and excuses until a trifling dispute appears to warrant almost any conduct. He understands how long a grievance can remain funny if the person holding it refuses to concede, and how readily someone else's supposed failings can excuse their own.

After the series ended in 1998, he returned to stand-up, a useful reminder of where his precise attention to everyday behaviour comes from. He wrote a 2007 animated film, also voicing Barry B. Benson, and later created and hosted Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee (2012–2019). His feature directorial debut was Unfrosted (2024), which he also wrote and starred in as Bob Cabana. For his acting, start with Seinfeld and allow its tentative opening season time; his colleagues can do plenty with the space he leaves them.
