Biography
Joachim Trier is a Norwegian filmmaker. He was born on 1 March 1974 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and raised in Oslo. He studied at the European Film College in Ebeltoft, Denmark, and the National Film and Television School in the United Kingdom.
Trier is known for the Oslo trilogy comprising Reprise (2006), Oslo, August 31st (2011) and The Worst Person in the World (2021). His other feature films include Louder Than Bombs (2015), Thelma (2017) and Sentimental Value (2025), the last of which he directed and co-wrote with Eskil Vogt. Sentimental Value premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Grand Prix, and received multiple Academy Award nominations.
Trier's grandfather was the filmmaker Erik Løchen. His father, Jacob Trier, worked as a sound technician on Norwegian films.
