Joely Richardson's habit is to listen harder than the script asks her to. In Nip/Tuck it gave a wife written to be dissatisfied a mind of her own, and across a long career it has kept her worth watching in parts that did not deserve her.

Watch Julia McNamara at the dinner table in Nip/Tuck (2003). The men have the money, the patients and the jokes; she has the reactions. Richardson plays her with her attention a beat ahead of the conversation, catching a lie before it has finished being told, and it is this brittle, watchful intelligence that made Julia more than the wife the scripts kept trying to write. That is her habit across the work. She listens as if the scene might turn out to be about her, and often, because she does, it is.
The career before that is a decade of being nearly noticed. Small film and theatre parts from the mid-1980s, then wider recognition in 1990s films and BBC dramas: Anita in 101 Dalmatians (1996), a family picture everyone saw; Starck in Event Horizon (1997), a haunted house in space that has since gathered a following; Charlotte Selton in The Patriot (2000), opposite Mel Gibson. Solid work, none of it hers to carry. Comedy was not the strength, and Maybe Baby (2000) drew mixed notices for it. She has said herself, "I don’t think I had good reviews until I was in my late 30s. It was around the Nip/Tuck years when I started to get some level of, 'Well done.'" We would not argue with her.
Nip/Tuck is the turn and the spine. Ryan Murphy's satire on the beauty trade, dressed as a soap, is held together by Dylan Walsh and Julian McMahon, and for seven years Richardson had the hardest job in it: the wife at home while the men have the fun. Sean is so decent he tires you; Christian is all teeth and tailoring. Julia could have been the show's scold. Richardson declines. She gives us a woman who knows exactly what her husband is not saying and has decided, for now, not to say it either. More than once we found we had stopped watching the surgeons and were watching her face at the edge of the frame, waiting to see what she would do with what she had just heard, and we were a little sorry when the cut went back to them. The series lost its nerve and then its mind. She was often the last thing in it still behaving like a person.
Since then the pattern has been period pieces and genre films, stage work with the RSC and on Broadway, where Side Effects (2011) earned her notices for the intensity she could hold across an evening, and television: Ethel Cripps in The Sandman (2022), and the Downton Abbey films. She has spoken about the parts thinning after fifty in Britain and rebuilding with smaller ones. Complex women in the middle of a family or a crisis is the casting shorthand, and it is roughly right. The better directors have learned what Murphy's writers took a while to notice: give her something to overhear and she will do the rest. The others still cast her as the wife. She will still be listening.

Joely Richardson is a British actress. Born in Marylebone, London, she is the daughter of actress Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.
Richardson is known for her role as Julia McNamara in the FX series Nip/Tuck (2003–2010). Her film credits include 101 Dalmatians (1996), Event Horizon (1997), The Patriot (2000) and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011). She has also appeared in The Tudors (2010) as Katherine Parr and The Sandman (2022) as Ethel Cripps.
She comes from the Redgrave theatrical family; her sister was actress Natasha Richardson.
