Biography
John Michael Hayes was an American screenwriter. Born in Worcester, Massachusetts, he began his career writing for radio series including The Adventures of Sam Spade and My Favorite Husband before moving into film in the early 1950s.
His first screen credit was Red Ball Express (1952). He collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock on four films in the 1950s: Rear Window (1954), To Catch a Thief (1955), The Trouble with Harry (1955) and The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956). He also wrote the screenplays for Peyton Place (1957), BUtterfield 8 (1960) and Nevada Smith (1966). Hayes received Academy Award nominations for Rear Window and Peyton Place, and an Edgar Award for Rear Window.
Later in his career he taught screenwriting at Dartmouth College. He died in Hanover, New Hampshire, in 2008.
