Biography

Jon M. Chu is an American film director, producer and screenwriter. He was born on 2 November 1979 in Palo Alto, California, and is an alumnus of the USC School of Cinematic Arts.

Chu's feature films include the dance movies Step Up 2: The Streets (2008) and Step Up 3D (2010), the concert film Justin Bieber: Never Say Never (2011), G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013), Crazy Rich Asians (2018), In the Heights (2021) and the two-part adaptation Wicked (2024) and Wicked: For Good (2025).

For his work on Wicked, Chu received the National Board of Review Award for Best Director and the Critics' Choice Award for Best Director.
