Biography

Joyce Compton, also credited as Olivia Joyce Compton, was an American actress. Born on 27 January 1907 in Lexington, Kentucky, she died on 13 October 1997 in Los Angeles, California. After studying dramatics, art, music and dancing at the University of Tulsa, she was named one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars in 1926.

Compton appeared in more than two hundred films, primarily B-movies, from the mid-1920s to the early 1960s. She played Dixie Belle Lee in The Awful Truth (1937) and Una Mellon in The White Parade (1934). Other credits include supporting roles in Mildred Pierce (1945), Christmas in Connecticut (1945) and The Best Years of Our Lives (1946). A comedy actress, she objected to being typecast as a "dumb blonde".

She was married briefly to William Francis Kaliher from 1955 to 1956. Compton was a devout Christian; her gravestone in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, bears the inscription "Christian Actress".
