Biography
Justin K. Thompson is an American film director and production designer. He began his career in 1993 working on projects for Disney Television Animation, DreamWorks Animation Television and Film Roman. From 2000 to 2005 he worked at Cartoon Network on series including The Powerpuff Girls, Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars.
Thompson joined Sony Pictures Animation in 2006. He served as production designer on Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009) and its sequel (2013), The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Smurfs: The Lost Village (2017), The Emoji Movie (2017) and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018). He made his directorial debut co-directing Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023) with Joaquim Dos Santos and Kemp Powers. He is also directing Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2027) with Bob Persichetti.
Thompson won Annie Awards for production design on Into the Spider-Verse and for directing on Across the Spider-Verse. The latter film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
