Kevin Whately is a quietly persuasive actor, particularly when a decent man is struggling to fit in. His listening makes ensembles better, though years of familiar roles have narrowed expectations of what he can do.

Kevin Whately lets Neville Hope look unhappy while the men around him carry on making a noise. In Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1983), he makes homesickness awkward without repeatedly asking us to feel sorry for the man. We were more touched by his homesickness than we expected; the jokes in the hut cannot quite make his difficulty settling disappear. Whately gives that unhappiness enough room to register without stopping the comedy to explain it.
That restraint matters in an ensemble with Tim Healy's wearily responsible Dennis Patterson and Jimmy Nail's belligerent Oz Osborne. Whately does not need to compete with the louder men to hold our attention. His listening and stillness make Neville someone we can believe lives beyond the next exchange of jokes. Some of the programme's sexual and national stereotyping is hard work, but his discomfort remains recognisable. We recommend the series for the company, and he is a substantial part of the reason.
Inspector Morse (1987–2000) made that steadiness central to his work opposite John Thaw. Robbie Lewis developed from a loyal subordinate into a thoughtful partner. Peak Practice (1993) gave Whately a series lead as Dr Jack Kerruish, before Lewis (2006–2015) put the detective in charge, alongside Laurence Fox. The continuity makes sense for an actor whose strengths are listening, dry wit and an unforced sense of decency. The danger is familiarity, with the decent Geordie becoming a casting habit.
The abusive husband in Trip Trap (1996) and bullying teacher in Purely Belter (2000) are useful correctives to that expectation. They make it harder to treat the nice Geordie as the limit of his abilities. His film work includes Sgt. Hardy in Anthony Minghella's The English Patient (1996), a romance we found moving and sometimes too slow. That is worth seeing, but it is not where we would send someone to discover Whately.
Begin with Neville, and allow the noisy company time to settle. There is no need to pretend that every joke has worn well. Stay for the man who would rather be at home.
Biography
Kevin Whately is an English actor. He trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama after studying accounting and finance, and began his career with stage work and early television appearances including Shoestring (1979).
He is known for playing Neville Hope in the comedy-drama series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1983–2004), Detective Sergeant Robert Lewis in Inspector Morse (1987–2000), and the same character, now Detective Inspector, in the spin-off Lewis (2006–2015). He appeared as Sgt. Hardy in the film The English Patient (1996) and as Dr Jack Kerruish in Peak Practice (1993–1995).
Whately was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2025 New Year Honours for services to drama and charity. He is married to actress Madelaine Newton.
