Biography
Lawrence G. Paull was an American production designer and art director. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 13 April 1938 and died in La Jolla, California, on 10 November 2019. He received a bachelor’s degree in architecture from the University of Arizona and began working in film in the 1970s as an art director before moving into production design.
Paull is known for his work on Blade Runner (1982), for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction and won a BAFTA Film Award for Best Production Design/Art Direction. He also served as production designer on Back to the Future (1985), Romancing the Stone (1984) and City Slickers (1991), among other films. His credits extend to Predator 2 (1990), Naked Gun 33⅓: The Final Insult (1994) and Escape from L.A. (1996). He was active in film from the 1970s until around 2000 and later contributed to production design education at institutions including the American Film Institute.
