Lola Dueñas makes uncertainty funny without making the person seem foolish. We value her most in an ensemble: in Volver, her natural delivery helps make the women’s willingness to help one another feel ordinary and convincing.

In Volver (2006), Lola Dueñas lets Sole be uncertain even when the scene offers a chance for a clean laugh. She does not tidy that uncertainty away for the sake of the comedy. We laughed, then felt protective of her, because the performance lets us notice how unsure Sole is without inviting us to look down on her. This is the Dueñas we value: natural in her delivery and attentive to the people sharing the scene.
Her early Almodóvar role was Matilde in Talk to Her (2002), a small part that brought her to wider attention. She then took a lead in Amenábar’s The Sea Inside (2004), before returning to Almodóvar for Volver. She went on to play Laura in Me Too (2009), another lead, and the lip reader in Almodóvar’s Broken Embraces (2009). Leading parts have not meant giving up the smaller ones. Her later work has also extended to French as well as Spanish productions, beyond the Almodóvar ensembles through which many viewers first encountered her.
Volver gives the clearest account of why her supporting work matters. Penélope Cruz gives Raimunda an impatient practicality, while Carmen Maura makes Irene’s place in the family feel familiar; Dueñas allows someone in their company to be less assured. Almodóvar gives the women time to establish how they behave together, and Dueñas uses that space without making Sole seem more important than the others. Alongside Blanca Portillo’s Agustina, she helps make their willingness to help feel like something they have been doing for years, rather than a kindness required by the plot.
Almodóvar occasionally makes forgiveness too comfortable in Volver, and Dueñas’s careful performance cannot make that problem disappear. It is a useful limit to set on our admiration: the acting persuades us about these women more fully than the film persuades us about what they should forgive. Start with Volver, and watch Sole as closely as the women who seem to know what they are doing.
Biography
Lola Dueñas is a Spanish actress. Born María Dolores Dueñas Navarro on 6 October 1971 in Madrid, she is the daughter of actor Nicolás Dueñas. She trained at the Teatro de La Abadía in Madrid under José Luis Gómez.
Dueñas made her feature film debut in Mensaka (1998). She is known for her roles as Matilde in Pedro Almodóvar’s Talk to Her (2002), Rosa in Alejandro Amenábar’s The Sea Inside (2004), Sole in Volver (2006), and Teresa in La bola negra (2026). She has also appeared in television series including Veneno (2020) and Instinto (2019).
Dueñas has received two Goya Awards for Best Actress, for The Sea Inside and Me Too (2009), and shared the Best Actress prize at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival for Volver.
