Louise Fletcher makes calm authority frightening. Her controlling characters believe they know best, and her restrained performances let us see the harm in that certainty; she deserved more substantial parts.

Louise Fletcher lets Nurse Ratched's calm do the frightening work. In One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), the ward is under such settled control that a patient's objection can look like bad behaviour before anyone considers it. We were frightened by how unlikely she seemed to reconsider, even for a moment. Fletcher plays her with the conviction of someone certain she is acting for everyone's benefit. It is an excellent performance because she gives us a person to watch closely, rather than simply someone to blame.
Her return to acting in Robert Altman's Thieves Like Us (1974) led to the part: Miloš Forman saw that performance and cast her as Ratched. Opposite Jack Nicholson's rebellious Randle Patrick McMurphy, Fletcher never strains to match his unruliness. Forman makes their contest absorbing, and her restraint keeps the nurse worth watching when our sympathies are being directed elsewhere. The film favours McMurphy heavily, but Fletcher makes it possible to question that preference without dismissing either character.
That does not excuse the film's simplifications. Its suggestion that psychiatric patients chiefly need an unruly man to shake things up deserves more scepticism than the script allows, as does the convenience of having a woman suppress all that male energy. Fletcher cannot repair those weaknesses, and treating Ratched as the explanation for everything wrong with the institution makes her performance less interesting. Watch how little she needs to insist on her authority. The unease comes from her assumption that it has already been accepted.
Later films did not consistently give her equally substantial work, with Firestarter (1984) and Flowers in the Attic (1987) among the lesser opportunities. Television provided a more sustained outlet, notably the recurring role of Kai Winn in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999). She was well suited to Winn's scheming, though it was hardly a departure from the controlling figures she was often asked to play. The disappointment is how often her film roles asked too little of her. When Nicholson has your attention, take a moment to look at Fletcher.
Biography
Louise Fletcher was an American actress. She is best known for her performance as Nurse Mildred Ratched in the 1975 film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, for which she received the Academy Award for Best Actress, as well as BAFTA and Golden Globe awards.
Born Estelle Louise Fletcher in Birmingham, Alabama, she studied drama at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After early television work in the 1950s and 1960s, she took an extended break from acting to raise her children. She returned to film in Robert Altman's Thieves Like Us (1974) before her breakthrough role. Fletcher later appeared in films including Exorcist II: The Heretic (1977) and Cruel Intentions (1999), and had recurring television roles as Kai Winn in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993–1999) and Peggy Gallagher in Shameless (2011). She received Emmy nominations for Picket Fences (1996) and Joan of Arcadia (2004). Her final role was in the series Girlboss (2017). She died in 2022.
