Biography
Marjorie Fowler (also credited as Marjorie Johnson) was an American film and television editor. Born on 16 July 1920 in Los Angeles, she was the daughter of screenwriter Nunnally Johnson and sister of novelist Nora Johnson. She began her career in the 1940s and worked on numerous features and television productions over five decades.
Her film credits include The Woman in the Window (1944), The Three Faces of Eve (1957), Separate Tables (1958), Elmer Gantry (1960), Lover Come Back (1961), Doctor Dolittle (1967) and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972). She also edited episodes of The Waltons. Fowler received an Academy Award nomination for Best Film Editing for Doctor Dolittle and won an American Cinema Editors Eddie Award for the television film The Marva Collins Story (1981).
She was married to film editor and director Gene Fowler Jr. until his death in 1998. In 1964 they became the first woman and man respectively to receive top honours from the American Cinema Editors. Fowler was awarded the organisation’s Lifetime Career Achievement Award in 2000. She died on 8 July 2003 in the Hollywood Hills, California.
