Mark Ryan is a persuasive supporting actor when physical confidence and watchfulness are enough to establish a character. We value his weary authority, though brief parts such as Bumblebee leave too little room to judge what else he can do.
Fi1m perspective
Nasir fights with two swords in Robin of Sherwood (1984–1986), and Mark Ryan's physical assurance gives the supporting part its force. He is good at playing watchful, capable men without needing much dialogue to establish them. His work with swordmaster Bob Anderson helps explain that confidence; in First Knight (1995), he combined an acting part with assistant swordmaster duties. The limitation is that such casting can ask him to look capable without giving him much else to play.
Transformers (2007), directed by Michael Bay, gives him the brief voice role of Bumblebee. We enjoyed watching the robots because their intricate construction made them convincing, although the muddled fights kept getting in the way. The thin characters and laboured comedy make too much of the film difficult to recommend. Ryan's limited dialogue leaves little room for extended characterisation, and it would be unfair to treat this as a full account of his acting.
He was also supplying on-set robot voices to help the live-action performers, work that matters even when it does not become the finished soundtrack. It gives the actors something to respond to, and it suits a performer with experience helping action scenes function. The series later used him for principal voice roles: Jetfire in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009), then Lockdown in Transformers: Age of Extinction (2014).
We would start with his first-season Hal Gates in Black Sails (2014) for more of the actor. The loyal, even-handed quartermaster gives Ryan's weary authority a clearer use within an ensemble. His place between the crew and its leadership gives that steadiness something useful to do, beyond looking dependable while other people make decisions. Try that before judging him by how much personality can fit into a brief robot voice.
