Mathew Horne makes ordinary decency convincing without asking us to admire it. We value his restraint in ensemble comedy, though Gavin & Stacey also shows the limits of giving a quiet leading man too little to do.

In Gavin & Stacey (2007), Mathew Horne keeps Gavin Shipman’s reactions small enough that we can believe in him between the jokes. There is no insistence that we notice how pleasant he is, which makes his company easier to enjoy. We warmed to him because he plays Gavin’s kindness without asking for our approval. Beside Joanna Page’s more expressive Stacey, he helps their quieter exchanges feel unforced. We rate that restraint, even when the writing gives the pair too little to occupy them.
His early work in The Catherine Tate Show (2004), playing Jamie in the Nan sketches, established him within character comedy before Gavin became his breakthrough. The follow-up partnership with James Corden produced Horne & Corden (2009) and Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009), drawing criticism for crude, lazy material. Those projects should not define an actor whose work has continued across sitcoms and theatre. He also played Sloane in Entertaining Mr Sloane (2009), a darker stage role than his television persona suggested. Bad Education (2012) brought another sustained ensemble part.
The difficulty in Gavin & Stacey is that Ruth Jones and Corden give their own characters such distinct comic rhythms that Horne can seem short of something to play. When the interruptions stop, his scenes with Page do not always sustain the comedy. Page supplies more expression in their quieter scenes, and at times we want Gavin to be awkward enough to make an exchange less comfortable. That is partly a complaint about the writing, but Horne’s smoothness does not much disturb it. The supporting players get the bigger laughs, and his likeability cannot always compensate.
We would be wary, though, of treating quietness as the limit of what he can do. His sketch and stage work also draw on physical timing, which gives him more to use than Gavin generally requires. In an ensemble, there is value in an actor who does not compete for emphasis on every line. For another leading role, we would like him to be allowed a little more impatience before someone else gets the punchline.

Mathew Horne is an English actor and comedian. Born Mathew Frazer Horne on 6 September 1978 in Nottinghamshire, he studied drama at the University of Manchester.
He is best known for playing Gavin Shipman in the BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey (2007–2024). Other television credits include The Catherine Tate Show, Horne & Corden, Bad Education and Agatha Raisin. Film roles include Lesbian Vampire Killers (2009) and voice work in Planet 51 (2009). He has also appeared in stage productions such as Rain Man.
