Biography
Matthew Friedman is an American film editor and senior lecturer at the AFI Conservatory. He is a member of the American Cinema Editors and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Born in rural east Tennessee, Friedman graduated from Northwestern University with degrees in Radio/Television/Film and Economics, and also studied at the University of Queensland. He began his career as an assistant editor before moving into feature editing.
Friedman is known for his work on The Farewell (2019), for which he received an ACE Eddie nomination, and Palm Springs (2020), for which he won the ACE Eddie Award for Best Edited Feature Film – Comedy or Musical. Other credits include John Tucker Must Die (2006), What Happens in Vegas (2008), Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (2009), Step Up Revolution (2012) and Life in a Year (2020). He has collaborated repeatedly with director Lulu Wang.
