Biography
Michael Conrad was an American actor. Born in New York City on 16 October 1925, he served in the US Army during the Second World War, attended City College, and trained in drama before beginning his career on stage and in television in the 1950s.
He appeared in numerous guest roles on series including Mission: Impossible, The Six Million Dollar Man and Charlie's Angels, as well as films such as They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969) and The Longest Yard (1974), in which he played Nate Scarboro. He was a regular on the series Delvecchio (1976–1977).
Conrad is best known for portraying Sgt. Phil Esterhaus on Hill Street Blues (1981–1984), ending each roll call with the line "Let's be careful out there". He won two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for the role, in 1981 and 1982. He died in Los Angeles on 22 November 1983.
