Biography

Murray Melvin was an English actor. Born in London in 1932, he was a member of Joan Littlewood’s Theatre Workshop company and originated the role of Geoffrey in Shelagh Delaney’s play A Taste of Honey, which he reprised in the 1961 film adaptation directed by Tony Richardson.

He appeared as Father Mignon in Ken Russell’s The Devils (1971) and as Reverend Samuel Runt in Stanley Kubrick’s Barry Lyndon (1975). Other screen roles include parts in Alfie (1966), The Phantom of the Opera (2004) and Torchwood (2006–2007). He died in 2023.
