Biography
Neal Baer is an American television writer and producer, and a qualified paediatrician. Born in Denver, Colorado, in 1955, he graduated magna cum laude from Colorado College and attended the AFI Conservatory before studying at Harvard University, where he earned degrees in sociology and medicine.
He began his television career writing for China Beach and joined the original staff of ER (1994) as a writer and producer, contributing to seven seasons and receiving multiple Emmy nominations. He later served as executive producer and showrunner on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (1999) for eleven seasons, and held similar roles on Under the Dome (2013), A Gifted Man (2011) and Designated Survivor (2016). He was also an executive producer of the documentary Welcome to Chechnya (2020).
Baer has lectured on global health and media at Harvard Medical School and other institutions, drawing on his medical background to inform storylines in medical dramas.
