Penelope Ann Miller can make the prospect of an ordinary life worth worrying about. Carlito's Way lets her do it: we value the tenderness she brings to a role that could have been merely useful to its leading man.

In Carlito's Way (1993), Al Pacino's Carlito is less guarded with Miller's Gail than he is with his criminal associates. She helps make the prospect of a life away from them seem worth the effort, rather than a convenient excuse for another gangster story. We were moved by the tenderness between them because, with Gail, Carlito can stop protecting himself for a moment. Brian De Palma's suspense needs that attachment: the next dangerous encounter matters more once there is someone he wants to get back to.
The early prominence came with The Freshman, Awakenings and Kindergarten Cop, all released in 1990. In Penny Marshall's Awakenings, she plays Paula alongside Robert De Niro and Robin Williams, whose efforts to reach another person make the film moving despite a script and score that sometimes press too hard. Later work moved towards supporting parts and television, including Doris Valentin in The Artist (2011) and a recurring role in American Crime (2015).
In a 1993 interview, Miller said, “I am not interested in playing any sex object to a male character.” Her frequent casting as a love interest or family member explains why she might need to say it. Gail still matters partly because of what she offers Carlito, and we should not pretend the role is free of that limitation. But Miller makes their time together worth watching in itself, without needing a threat nearby to keep us interested.
We would welcome more parts that ask what her characters want beyond the leading man's future. A romance this persuasive makes us curious about the woman even when the story is chiefly concerned with the man. De Palma's film does sometimes slacken, but the romance is a reason to be patient, not something to hurry past on the way to the next set-piece. Start with Carlito's Way, and allow it time for the two of them to talk.
Biography
Penelope Ann Miller is an American actress. She began her career on Broadway in the original production of Biloxi Blues (1985–1986) and received a Tony Award nomination for her performance in the 1988–1989 revival of Our Town.
Miller came to prominence in the early 1990s with film roles including Paula in Awakenings (1990), Joyce in Kindergarten Cop (1990) and Gail in Carlito's Way (1993), for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Her other credits include The Freshman (1990), Chaplin (1992), The Artist (2011) and The Birth of a Nation (2016), as well as television appearances in series such as American Crime and Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022).
Born Penelope Andrea Miller on 13 January 1964 in Los Angeles, she is the daughter of actor and producer Mark Miller and costume designer Beatrice Miller. She trained at Menlo College and HB Studio in New York.
