Biography
Pete Smith (also credited as Peter Smith) was a New Zealand actor. He made his screen debut as Api in the 1985 science fiction film The Quiet Earth, for which he won a GOFTA award for best supporting actor. His other notable film roles include Hone in The Piano (1993) and Dooley in Once Were Warriors (1994).
Smith appeared in further New Zealand productions such as What Becomes of the Broken Hearted? (1999), Rapa Nui (1994) and The Legend of Johnny Lingo (2002), as well as playing a featured orc in The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). He also worked in television, including appearances in Shortland Street (1999) and The Market (2005), the latter earning him a Screen Award for best supporting actor performance. He won a further best supporting actor award for his role in Flight of the Albatross (1995).
Smith was born on 7 August 1958 in Kaitaia and died there on 29 January 2022.
