Peter Coyote makes authority sound reasonable, even when we have grounds to distrust it. His measured voice is his strongest asset: useful in supporting parts, and particularly good at making dense documentary narration clear without fuss.

In E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Peter Coyote's Keys is a government agent pursuing the alien. It gives him a familiar task: making official authority credible in a story whose sympathies lie elsewhere. We were moved by the boy's friendship with his homesick visitor, because Steven Spielberg takes that attachment seriously rather than treating it as merely cute. Coyote supplies the authority, but the children and the creature remain the reason to watch.
Erin Brockovich (2000) gives him another supporting assignment, as Kurt Potter in Soderbergh's legal drama. Julia Roberts carries the film, scene by scene. Its attention to how such cases are fought makes the predictable course of events forgivable. His calm authority belongs in this sort of professional setting, but it can also become all we notice about him. Here we value his contribution without finding the part especially distinctive.
Those parts belong to a screen career that began with Die Laughing (1980), brought wider notice with E.T., and settled into supporting film and television work through the following decades. Roman Polanski's Bitter Moon (1992) gives him a different sort of role, as the expatriate storyteller. It is worth remembering that part before reducing him to a dependable official. But the more consequential turn was towards documentary narration, which developed alongside the acting from the 1990s rather than replacing it.
Ken Burns is the collaborator who makes the strongest case for Coyote's particular skill, including in The Roosevelts: An Intimate History (2014). He delivers dense historical writing with clarity, and the measured voice gives the words weight without much embellishment. Peter Coyote (born Rachmil Pinchus Ben Mosha Cohon, 10 October 1941) is an American actor and narrator. He began his career in theatre as an actor, writer and director with the San Francisco Mime Troupe in the 1960s. He was a founder of the Diggers, an anarchist group active in Haight-Ashbury, and later served as a member and chairman of the California Arts Council from 1975 to 1983.
Coyote moved into film acting in the late 1970s. His screen credits include E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Erin Brockovich (2000) as Kurt Potter, Patch Adams (1998), Sphere (1998) and A Walk to Remember (2002). He has also worked extensively as a narrator for documentaries, television series and events including the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
