Biography
Philippe Morier-Genoud is a French theatre and film actor. Born on 2 March 1944 in Thonon-les-Bains, he studied philosophy and pedagogy in Grenoble from 1964 to 1968, where he first encountered theatre director Georges Lavaudant. He began his stage career in the 1970s and became a permanent ensemble member at the Centre Dramatique National des Alpes in Grenoble (1975–1985), the Théâtre National Populaire in Lyon (1985–1995), and the Odéon-Théâtre de l’Europe in Paris with Lavaudant’s company (1995–2005).
Morier-Genoud made his film debut in François Truffaut’s The Woman Next Door (1981). He is known for roles in Au Revoir les Enfants (1987) as Father Jean, Cyrano de Bergerac (1990) as Le Bret, Three Colors: Blue (1993) and Three Colors: White (1994) as the Judge, and voice work as Julius Caesar in the Asterix films The Mansions of the Gods (2014) and The Secret of the Magic Potion (2018). He received the Chevalier of the Legion of Honour in 2015.
