Biography
Richard Franklin Chew is an American film editor. Born in Los Angeles, he studied at UCLA and briefly attended Harvard Law School before leaving to pursue a career in film. He began with camera and editing work on documentaries, including the Oscar-winning short The Redwoods (1967).
Chew transitioned to feature films as co-editor on The Conversation (1974) and supervising film editor on One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). He shared the Academy Award for Best Film Editing for his work on Star Wars (1977) with Paul Hirsch and Marcia Lucas. His other credits include Risky Business (1983), That Thing You Do! (1996), Shanghai Noon (2000) and I Am Sam (2001). He has received BAFTA Awards for The Conversation and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and the ACE Career Achievement Award in 2022.
