Biography
Richard M. Sherman was an American composer and songwriter. With his brother Robert B. Sherman, he formed the songwriting team known as the Sherman Brothers, who wrote music and lyrics for numerous Disney films and other productions.
Born in New York City, Sherman began his career writing popular songs before joining Walt Disney Studios in 1960. The brothers’ work on Mary Poppins (1964) earned them Academy Awards for best original score and best original song (“Chim Chim Cher-ee”). They contributed songs to films including The Jungle Book (1967), Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968), The Aristocats (1970) and Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971), as well as the theme park song “It’s a Small World (After All)”.
Sherman died on 25 May 2024 in Beverly Hills, California.
