Biography
Richard Wattis (also credited as Richard Cameron Wattis) was an English actor born on 25 February 1912 in Wednesbury, Staffordshire. He died on 1 February 1975 in Kensington, London.
After working in electrical engineering, he trained at the Croydon Repertory Theatre and appeared in West End productions. His film debut came in A Yank at Oxford (1938); wartime service interrupted his early career. He became known for character roles in British comedies of the 1950s and 1960s, frequently playing civil servants or officials, including Manton Bassett in the St Trinian's films.
Notable screen credits include the Assistant Manager in The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956), Albert Prosser in Hobson's Choice (1954), Northbrook in The Prince and the Showgirl (1957), Fotheringay in The Prisoner (1967) and an uncredited role in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968). He also appeared regularly on television, notably in the series Sykes.
