Biography
Roshan Seth is an Indian-born British actor. Born on 2 April 1942 in Patna, Bihar, he trained at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art after studying history in India. He began his career in British theatre and repertory in the 1960s and 1970s, including work with the Royal Shakespeare Company, before taking a break from acting to work as a journalist and editor in India.
Seth returned to acting with the role of Jawaharlal Nehru in the 1982 film Gandhi, which brought international attention. He appeared as Chattar Lal in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984) and as Amritrao in A Passage to India (1984). In 1985 he played Hussein "Papa" Ali in My Beautiful Laundrette. Later credits include Mississippi Masala (1991), Street Fighter (1994), and Dumbo (2019). He has also worked extensively in television and theatre.
Seth received a BAFTA nomination for Gandhi and won a Genie Award for Best Actor for Such a Long Journey (1998). He was appointed OBE in 2006.
