Biography
Stuart Wurtzel is an American production designer and art director. He was born on 9 August 1940 in Newark, New Jersey. He studied at the Carnegie Institute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University), receiving a B.F.A. in 1962 and an M.F.A. in scenic design in 1964, and worked as a resident stage designer at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco for four years before moving into film.
Wurtzel’s film credits include production design on Woody Allen’s The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) and Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), the latter earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Art Direction. Other film work encompasses Hair (1979), Stepmom (1998), Enchanted (2007), Marley & Me (2008) and Mr. Popper’s Penguins (2011). In television he has designed miniseries including Angels in America (2003), for which he received an Emmy Award.
He is married to production designer Patrizia von Brandenstein.
