Biography

Ted Haworth was an American production designer and art director. Born Edward S. Haworth on 26 September 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio, he began his career as an illustrator and set designer at Warner Brothers before receiving his first screen credit as art director on Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train (1951). He worked on more than 50 feature films between 1950 and 1992.

Haworth won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction for Sayonara (1957) and received five further nominations in the category for Marty (1955), Some Like It Hot (1959), Pepe (1960), The Longest Day (1962) and What a Way to Go! (1964). Among his production design credits are Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Beguiled (1971), Jeremiah Johnson (1972), Poltergeist II: The Other Side (1986) and batteries not included (1987). He was posthumously inducted into the Art Directors Guild Hall of Fame.

He was the father of production designer Sean Haworth and pop artist Jann Haworth. Haworth died on 18 February 1993 in Sundance, Utah.
