Biography
Tom Stoppard is a Czech-born British playwright and screenwriter, also credited as Tomáš Sträussler. He was born in Zlín, Czechoslovakia, and moved to England as a child after the Second World War. He began his career as a journalist in Bristol before writing his first plays in the early 1960s.
Stoppard is known for stage works including Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1966) and screenplays such as Brazil (1985), Empire of the Sun (1987), Shakespeare in Love (1998, co-written with Marc Norman), Enigma (2001) and Anna Karenina (2012). He directed the film adaptation of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead (1990). He received an Academy Award for the Shakespeare in Love screenplay and multiple Tony Awards for his plays.
Stoppard died at his home in Dorset, England, on 29 November 2025, aged 88.
