Virginia Madsen

In Candyman (1992), Virginia Madsen gives Helen Lyle, a student investigating an urban legend, a credibility that survives the increasingly strange story around her. We can doubt Helen’s decisions without losing interest in the woman making them. Bernard Rose has a compelling monster in Tony Todd, but Madsen gives the fear time to develop between the shocks. We found those stretches frightening because Helen remains believable beside a threat whose warm voice makes it sound inviting. Neither actor needs to hurry us towards the next scare.

Her early roles did not consistently make room for that kind of work. Princess Irulan in Dune (1984) was an early breakthrough, followed by parts in teen films, comedies and thrillers. The sexually powerful roles, including The Hot Spot (1990), helped establish an image that limited her casting options. Candyman gave her a lead in which realism and vulnerability mattered, and enough responsibility for the film that those qualities could not go unnoticed.

The later resurgence came with Alexander Payne’s Sideways (2004), in which she plays Maya Randall. It was a supporting part, and a perceptive adult woman was a good use of an actor whose listening can register small emotional changes. Her restraint gives those responses room without making each one a demonstration of how much acting is being done. There is no need to treat this as the discovery of an ability she had already shown in horror, though it gave that ability a different setting.

The limits are visible in Candyman too. Its uneven pacing and narrow view of its community remain problems, however firmly Madsen holds our attention. We recommend it with those reservations, and Rose’s willingness to let her and Todd sustain the fear is a large part of the reason. Start there for Madsen, but do not expect her to make the danger feel comfortably distant.
