As Phil in The Larry Sanders Show (1992), Wallace Langham plays a head writer whose cynicism seems well suited to the job. Keeping an insecure television star happy is work enough; having to be funny as well seems an unreasonable request. Langham’s understated sarcasm fits naturally into the backstage squabbles, and his timing makes him useful without requiring the comedy to stop for him. We laughed, then winced at how much effort went into keeping one man happy. This is where we value Langham most, among colleagues whose working lives give them good reasons to be difficult.
His move from youthful supporting parts into regular television work made good use of that dry manner. The teen films, including Weird Science (1985) and The Chocolate War (1988), came before his breakthrough as Phil. As David Hodges in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which he joined in 2003, he found another suitable assignment: an eccentric trace analyst with a know-it-all manner. The continuity is clear enough, even across different kinds of programme. He suits characters whose knowledge is useful and whose company might require a little patience.
Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris’s Little Miss Sunshine (2006), in which he plays Kirby, gives him a supporting part in a funny, tender family comedy. The cast keep the contrivances tolerable, although the film is less persuasive when it tells us what to think about winning. We recommend it on those terms, without making Langham’s presence a reason to overlook the faults or claiming that his contribution is what makes the film work.
The stronger case for Langham is still The Larry Sanders Show, alongside Garry Shandling, Jeffrey Tambor and Rip Torn. His understated sarcasm fits a comedy in which keeping the star happy generates so much of the trouble. The danger with this kind of casting is that the cynical colleague can become predictable, supplying a dry response whenever one is required. Phil has a workplace that gives the attitude a purpose. Start there, and be prepared to have a few celebrity references explained.
Biography
Wallace Langham is an American actor. He began his career in 1985 under the stage name Wally Ward before reverting to his real name in 1989. He is known for his roles as Phil, the head writer on the HBO series The Larry Sanders Show (1992–1998), and as David Hodges on the CBS series CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2003–2015), a role he reprised in CSI: Vegas (2021).
Langham has appeared in films including Little Miss Sunshine (2006) as Kirby, The Social Network (2010) as Peter Thiel, and Ford v Ferrari (2019) as Dr Granger. His other television work includes Veronica's Closet (1997–2000) and guest roles in series such as ER, The West Wing, For All Mankind and Physical.
