Biography
William Steinkamp (1953–2025) was an American film editor. The son of editor Fredric Steinkamp, he began as an assistant editor on two Sydney Pollack films in the late 1970s before co-editing most of Pollack’s subsequent films with his father from 1980. After his father’s retirement in 1995, he became Pollack’s principal editor until the director’s final film, The Interpreter (2005).
Steinkamp also edited several films directed by Gary Fleder, beginning with Kiss the Girls (1997). His credits include Tootsie (1982), Out of Africa (1985), The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), Scent of a Woman (1992), The Firm (1993), A Time to Kill (1996), Runaway Jury (2003), August Rush (2007) and The Shack (2017). He received Academy Award nominations for film editing on Tootsie, Out of Africa and The Fabulous Baker Boys, and was nominated for ACE Eddie awards including for Scent of a Woman.
