Biography
Winton C. Hoch was an American cinematographer. Born in Storm Lake, Iowa, he moved to California in 1924 and graduated as a chemist from the California Institute of Technology in 1931. He joined the Technicolor company in 1934 as a research physicist, contributing to the development of its three-colour process, and began working as a cinematographer in 1936. Hoch never photographed a black-and-white feature film.
He collaborated frequently with director John Ford, serving as director of photography on 3 Godfathers (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon (1949), The Quiet Man (1952), Mister Roberts (1955) and The Searchers (1956). Hoch received Academy Awards for colour cinematography on Joan of Arc (1948), She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Quiet Man, the last shared with second-unit cinematographer Archie Stout. He also worked on television series including Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea and The Time Tunnel, and was elected president of the American Society of Cinematographers.
