Biography
Alan Jay Lerner (31 August 1918 – 14 June 1986) was an American lyricist, librettist and screenwriter. He collaborated with composer Frederick Loewe on the stage musicals Brigadoon (1947), My Fair Lady (1956) and Camelot (1960), and the film Gigi (1958). He also worked with Burton Lane on Paint Your Wagon (1951 stage; 1969 film) and On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1965 stage; 1970 film).
Lerner wrote the screenplay and story for An American in Paris (1951), winning an Academy Award for Best Story and Screenplay. Other screen credits include Royal Wedding (1951). He was educated at Harvard University, where he contributed to Hasty Pudding shows, and earlier wrote radio scripts. Lerner received three Academy Awards and multiple Tony Awards.
