Biography
Arthur Freed (1894–1973) was an American lyricist and film producer. He began his career as a songwriter and pianist before joining MGM as a lyricist in 1928, where he collaborated with Nacio Herb Brown on standards including the title song for Singin' in the Rain.
Freed became a leading producer of MGM musicals from the late 1930s onward. His credits include Meet Me in St. Louis (1944), An American in Paris (1951), Singin' in the Rain (1952), The Band Wagon (1953) and Gigi (1958). He received two Academy Awards for Best Picture and an Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. Freed also served as president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1963 to 1966.
