Biography

Alison Chitty is a British production designer, set designer and costume designer. She trained at Saint Martin's School of Art and the Central School of Art and Design, and was later resident designer at the Victoria Theatre in Stoke-on-Trent and at the Royal National Theatre for eight years.

She is known for her collaborations with director Mike Leigh, for whom she served as production designer on Life Is Sweet (1990), Naked (1993) and Secrets & Lies (1996). Chitty has also designed extensively for opera companies including the English National Opera, Royal Opera House and Santa Fe Opera, and for theatre directors including Sir Peter Hall and Francesca Zambello. She directed the Motley Theatre Design Course from the early 1990s.

Chitty received an OBE in 2004 and was elected a Royal Designer for Industry in 2009. She has won two Olivier Awards for Best Costume Design, for Remembrance of Things Past (2001) and The Voysey Inheritance (2007).
