Biography
Andrew McAlpine is a production designer who has worked on more than 35 feature films. Born in Auckland, he graduated with an MFA from Nottingham University and received a Gulbenkian grant for holography work in theatre. He co-founded the Commonstock theatre company and collaborated with directors including Sally Potter before moving into film and music videos in the 1980s.
McAlpine is best known for his work on Jane Campion’s The Piano (1993), for which he received BAFTA and Australian Film Institute awards. Other credits include Sid and Nancy (1986), Spike Lee’s Clockers (1995), Danny Boyle’s The Beach (2000), An Education (2009), Me Before You (2016) and Serenity (2019). He is based in the United Kingdom.
